google just announced (well a couple weeks ago) My Tracks for android. this is an awesome app for my g1 phone. (i really enjoy the phone…maybe i’ll make a post about it later). anyways, this is a good segue into another previous little project…it was this gps/photo tracker using gpx files and flickr…
this was one of my first little web applications i attempted back in 2007. yes back in the day when i carried my garmin forerunner gps everywhere with me. now i think it’s collecting dust in a drawer or something. it basically displayed a GPS track of your movement and tagged where along that track you took a picture. so you fed in a gpx file and a flickr set number and it combined them to display the track and pictures on google maps. it was pretty nifty. nothing fancy. a little marker per picture using the exif info. you could click it and view the picture.
anyways, once i got it working i abandoned it. it was really a project just to try out ruby on rails. haha i guess it didn’t convince me to keep working with it. probably because i wasn’t focusing on the framework where i bet it shines. plus, my current host doesn’t support ruby on rails. my web app is at http://dennis.notpunny.com. i’m actually still surprised it’s still there. i haven’t paid for the host in a year or so heh. so it might disappear any second. it’s not very functional to an outside user (i never made a gpx uploader). but here’s an example from a lake tahoe hike: http://dennis.notpunny.com/?gpx=tahoehike.gpx&setid=72157600521167745&hoffset=4. yes nothing fancy.
